EXPLORE THE WORLD OF ABSTRACTS IN PHOTOGRAPHY

Abstraction allows man to see with his mind what he cannot see physically with his eyes. Abstract art enables the artist to perceive beyond the tangible, to extract the infinite out of the finite. It is the emancipation of the mind.  It is an explosion into unknown areas.” – Arshile Gorky

Abstracts in photography allow you to see subjects in a non-literal or documentary way. They are expressive, mysterious, colorful, bold, subtle and allow you and your viewer to interpret your subject in unique ways.  They encourage you to explore light, shadow, colors, line, shape and texture while freeing you to veer from the literal and realistic. The abstract world encourages you to think differently.

When you open your mind to seeing the world around you as a blank canvas from which to create visual art outside of documenting things by their names, you’ll discover that your images will share a different visual language. A flower and its petals become colors and curves. Concrete steps become rhythmic patterns, and so on.

Join Jamie Konarski Davidson for an educational and inspirational online workshop that provides an opportunity to learn some history of abstract art & photography, approaches for seeing subjects differently and a variety of techniques that lend themselves to abstractions in the field and in post. While you can participate in and experience the workshop from home or wherever you are, there will also be an optional in-person field session available.

STRETCH YOUR “SEEING” MUSCLES

I found I could say things with colour and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way – things I had no words for.” – Georgia O’Keeffe

As we explore the process of experimentation and play that photographing in abstracts provides, you’ll discover that abstracts are waiting to be discovered everywhere – in nature, architecture, food, fabric, furniture, and even in desk drawers. A simple spool of thread or an egg can provide endless opportunities to create abstract images.

This workshop will challenge those who are literal purists as well as those who lean easily into the interpretive style of photography. The assignment can be completed anytime and anywhere, and the images submitted may be processed however each photographer is led. The primary constraint is that the images created must be new (not pulled from your archives for reinterpretation).
